ARTESIA — Senior Tori Northcutt and junior Ebony Bunton scored 16 points each and Clovis High’s girls cruised to a 62-35 victory over Artesia on Friday night in their final tune-up for District 4-5A play.

The Lady Wildcats (13-5) face rival Hobbs at Rock Staubus Gym on Friday in their district opener.

The Lady Cats led from start to finish. They broke the game open by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 37-16 in the second half.

“We didn’t execute very well offensively tonight, but in the second half we got our running game going,” Lady Cats coach Miles Watters said. “In the second half, we did a good job or rebounding and defending, and the kids ran the floor well.”

Bunton and Northcutt each had two of Clovis’ seven 3-pointers in the contest. All 14 players saw action in the game, with nine of them breaking into the scoring column.

Reserves Amanda Meyers, Kayla Breedlove and Katharine Cordova each chipped in a 3-pointer for Clovis.

Watters said the Lady Cats slowly pulled ahead in the first half, leading 25-15 at the intermission.

“We had a great second half, where we just ran them into the ground,” he said.

He said it was nice to be able to make extensive use of his bench in the contest.

“It was fun to have the kids in there that don’t alwasy get to play much,” he said. “They gave us great effort.”

Senior guard Brenna Fraze led Artesia (13-6) with seven points.
