Struggling for offense most of the night, it was left to junior guard Ebony Bunton to deliver late for Clovis High’s girls.

Bunton scored 14 of her 24 points in the final 12 minutes and sophomore guard Mariah Sena chipped in all five of her points late as the Lady Wildcats rallied for a 45-41 win over Roswell High, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, in Saturday night’s finale of the Milk Madness Classic at Rock Staubus Gym.

Bunton’s 3-pointer with 41 seconds left put the Lady Cats (12-5) ahead for good 43-40, and she added two clinching free throws with 7.3 seconds to go.

“That was huge, obviously,” CHS girls coach Miles Watters said of Bunton’s trifecta. “It didn’t ice the game, but it gave us some breathing room.”

Meantime, Sena hit two free throws with 2:34 left to tie the score, then got behind Roswell’s pressure to convert a 3-point play on an assist from freshman Katharine Cordova for a 40-38 lead with 1:51 left.

“They (Lady Cats) played with energy,” said Lady Coyotes coach Joe Carpenter, whose team scored the first six points of the second half for a 26-17 advantage midway through the third quarter. “We didn’t do a good job in the second half. We didn’t meet their intensity.”

Guard Samantha Matta, an Eastern New Mexico University signee, paced Roswell High (15-3) with 16 points.

Freshman Antiesha Brown’s backcourt steal and layup gave the Lady Cats their first points of the second half. That was followed by a rebound basket and a layup off a steal by Bunton, getting Clovis right back in the game.

“Our offense kind of got clicking there at the end,” Watters said. “They’re (Lady Coyotes) a very talented team. I thought we defended pretty decent tonight against a team that can score.”

Senior guard Tori Northcutt also reached double figures for Clovis, scoring 10 points.

Carpenter, whose team was without 5-foot-10 sophomore forward Chantele Riddle (hip injury and mild concussion) for the two games in Clovis, said Bunton was the difference.

“She did a good job tonight,” he said. “And she made the free throws at the end to seal it.”
