Former ENMU quarterback hired as Louisville’s coach

Recently-hired University of Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe started his collegiate career as a quarterback at Eastern New Mexico University, according to a press release from Louisville.

Kragthorpe, hired away from the University of Tulsa, was a backup to record-setting quarterback Kevin Kott at ENMU in 1983 and 1984 under coach Bill Kelly. He transferred to West Texas A&M for his final two seasons, where he completed 179 of 344 passes for 1,980 yards and nine touchdowns.

Kragthorpe was 29-22 in five seasons at Tulsa before being hired Tuesday to replace Bobby Petrino, who took the Atlanta Falcons’ job.

Louisville finished the season ranked sixth in Division I-A.
