PORTALES — Senior post Chance Sherburne scored a team-high 14 points as Portales controlled the fourth period and beat the Socorro Warriors 50-46 Friday night in the Portales Shootout.
Portales coach Mark Gallegos said the team shook off its mediocre play for much of the game, finally taking control late.
“We didn’t play very well for three quarters,” Gallegos said.
After trailing by two points at the end of the third quarter, Sherburne and juniors Chris Mosier and Ky Mitchell combined to score the first seven points of the final period, giving Portales a 45-38 lead.
“We just knew we had to come out and play defense, because we haven’t been playing defense all year,” Mosier said. “That (fourth-quarter run) was real big because it brought our confidence level out to where it needed to be.”
Senior Todd McBroom added nine points for the Rams (6-4) while Mitchell picked up half of his eight points in the final period.
Junior guard Jeremy Montano gave the Rams trouble throughout the contest, scoring six of his game-high 19 points for Socorro in the fourth quarter.
“We played Montano pretty good (on the outside),” Gallegos said. “Except on the in-bounds play, which is crazy. You figure that’s something you can cover because it’s a set (play) and we just didn’t do a good job there.”
Rams senior post Hunter Rackler left late in the game with an apparent knee injury.
“There’s really no way to tell (how bad it is right now),” Gallegos said. “He landed kind of funny on his knee and he’s in some pain, not a whole lot of swelling just yet. We’ll have him evaluated in the morning and see where he’s at. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.”
The Rams complete the weekend event with a 6 p.m. tipoff today against Taos.
