Fillies, Wolverines advance at Texico

TEXICO — The Bovina Fillies hit six 3-pointers and rode a 19-point outing from junior guard Ruby Vela to beat district rival Farwell 53-51 on Friday and advance to the girls championship game of the Citizens Bank Border Shootout.

Vela hit three of the team’s 3-pointers, and got support from three teammates with 10 points apiece. Bovina (8-6) will meet Plains, a 61-19 winner over Tatum, in today’s 6:30 p.m. championship game.

Farwell (4-9) fell behind 19-7 at the quarter, but made a game of it by outscoring the Fillies 39-29 in the second half. Junior Brianna Anglin and freshman Tiffani Jones each scored 10 points for the Lady Blue.

Plains got five 3-pointers for 15 points from junior Lauren Davis. The Cowgirls (9-2) rolled to a 39-15 halftime lead and held the Lady Coyotes (4-3) to one field goal and two free throws the rest of the way.

Texico advanced to today’s 8:15 p.m. boys championship game against Plains with a 44-22 victory over Dexter. The Wolverines (8-2), who led 27-9 at halftime, got 17 points from junior post Daniel Schuler and 16 points, including three 3-pointers from junior forward Courtland Luscombe.

Plains (10-2) handed the Clovis sophomores their first loss of the season, rolling to a 70-36 victory as sophomore Chris Gonzales led four Cowboys in double figures with 15 points. Tanner Adams led the Wildcats (6-1) with 10 points.

In boys consolation semifinals:

* Tatum overcame a five-point halftime deficit, outscoring Melrose 16-5 in the third quarter en route to a 56-41 win. Senior Trent Hemann netted 17 points for the Coyotes (5-2), while sophomore Call Benard led the Buffaloes (0-8) with 12 points.

* Bovina outscored Farwell 18-7 in the third quarter to break open a tie game and beat the Steers 64-49 in the other consolation game. Junior post Ivan Solis led three players in double figures for the Mustangs (4-6) with 19 points, while senior Dan Patterson and junior Finus Nolte scored 10 points each for Farwell (3-11).

In girls consolation semifinals

* Texico rebounded from a first-round loss with 15 3-pointers, including eight by junior guard Faith Martin, in a 74-21 rout of Dexter. Martin finished with 26 points for the Lady Wolverines (7-4), while junior Bryn Mayfield added 14 points (four 3-pointers), sophomore Amanda Bass 13 points and freshman Katlin Luscombe 11 points (three 3-pointers).
Junior Krystal Banda led the Lady Demons with eight points.

* Melrose’s (6-2) got eight points each from senior Jamie Dickerman and junior TaNeil Roberts and held off Lovington 41-37, and will meet Texico for the consolation championship. The Lady Wildcats (4-7) were led by sophomore Stephanie Hernandez with 10 points.
