Zias improve to 3-0; face West Texas A&M tonight

CANYON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University senior guard Heather Brown scored 16 points and moved into 11th place on the school’s career scoring list and the Zias stayed unbeaten by beating Adams State 68-36 on Friday in the Lady Buff Classic, hosted by West Texas A&M.

Sophomore guard Laura Vote hit four 3-pointers and finished with a career-best 14 points for the Zias, and senior forward Elizabeth Richards added seven points and 11 rebounds.

It is the second straight season ENMU opened the season with three wins. The Zias take on host WT (3-1), which beat St. Edward’s 63-42 on Friday, at 5 p.m. today in a game which will also count as the Lone Star Conference South Division opener for both teams.

Against Adams State, the Zias scored the game’s first nine points on the way to a 29-4 lead. Eastern held the Grizzlies (1-2) to two field goals in the first 17:10 of the game.

ENMU shot 57 percent from the field in the first half and converted 13 Grizzlies turnovers into 21 points.

The Zias opened the second half with an 8-1 run, capped by a Richards layup that gave Eastern a 40-14 advantage with 16:33 left in the second half.

The Grizzlies managed to trim the deficit to 18 points with a little under 13 minutes to go, but that was as close as they got.

With 932 points, Brown passes Leslie Shippy on the school’s career scoring list.

Ashley Chambers led Adams State with 13 points.
