ALBUQUERQUE — Fort Sumner slipped up a bit in the second game against Roy, but the Vixens were otherwise generally in control in beating Roy 25-12, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21 in a Class 1A state quarterfinal match Thursday at Tingley Coliseum.

Senior outside hitter Alex Owens led four Vixens (16-6) in double figures in kills with 18 against the scrappy Lady Longhorns (14-4).

Fort Sumner coach Lisa McMath said her team refocused after losing the second game.

“We just talked about not having any regrets,” she said. “You’ve got to leave here knowing you gave it everything you’ve got.”

Fort Sumner has dominated Elida in recent years, but this season lost three times to the Lady Tigers (21-0).

“We’ve played them before and we know what it’ll take,” McMath said. “It’s just a matter of getting out there and getting it done.”
