ARTESIA — Playoff hopes of the Clovis High boys soccer team took a hit on Saturday with a 1-0 loss at Artesia.

Clovis (13-6-1) is hoping to grab for one of two at-large bid in the 12-team Class 5A state tournament.

The New Mexico Activities Association seeding committee will pick two at-large teams and seed the tournament today, Clovis coach Shaun Gill said.

Artesia junior fullback Haydn Haas scored in the 61st minute after he came out wide and slipped past the Clovis defense for a far post shot.

The Wildcats equaled Artesia in shots with 13.

Clovis senior goalkeeper Josh Bussen recorded eight saves, while Artesia junior Aaron Ornelas stopped 10 Clovis shots.

Gill said the first 10 minutes of the first half were the best his team played all game.

“We had several good opportunities late,” Gill said. “We had a few that could have gone in but we couldn’t get them in.”
