Sept. 22, 2006 Meetings Watch

The following is a report on Thursday’s City Commission meeting:

• Commissioners recognized Clovis Police Chief Bill Carey for his service, and Mayor David Lansford presented him with a key to the city and a plaque.
Lansford described Carey’s contributions during his 29 years on the force as “enormous,” adding, “you cannot measure the contributions to the community.”

• City Manager Joe Thomas and Lansford reported on last week’s visit to Hurlburt Field, Fla., to meet with members of the 16th Special Operations Wing that will assume ownership of Cannon Air Force Base in October 2007. Thomas said they met with about 300 active-duty personnel and gave presentations about eastern New Mexico. They had the chance to tour some of the aircraft that will be brought to Cannon Air Force Base, Thomas said.

• Approved the city’s taking over responsibility for operation and maintenance of the Natatorium and swimming pool operated by Play Inc.
Thomas said there had been issues with the pool that included water temperature and chemical levels. He said the city will name an aquatic manager who will oversee Potter Pool as well.
He estimated the cost to the city to be about $82,354 annually.
Thomas said the recommendation was agreed to by Play Inc. Board President Charles Lott.
