ROSWELL — Socorro outscored Clovis High 3-2 in penalty kicks and the Lady Warriors captured a 3-2 victory over CHS on Saturday in the fifth-place match of the Goddard Invitational girls soccer tournament.
Both teams scored twice in the first half — seniors Patrice Dykes and Jordan Garrett had the Lady Wildcats’s goals — before playing through a scoreless second half and two overtime periods.
“We had plenty of opportunities,” first-year CHS coach Shane Leatherwood said. “We outshot them 10-4, but we made a couple of big-time mistakes (on defense).”
On Saturday morning, the Lady Wildcats (2-3-1) completed a suspended quarterfinal match suspended by rain on Friday, losing to Socorro 3-0.
The teams played about 20 minutes before the match was halted. Most of Friday’s schedule was wiped out, Leatherwood noted.
“We were playing way better yesterday than we were today,” he said. “We weren’t near as fresh today as we were yesterday.”
Clovis came back for a 7-0 win over the Roswell High junior varsity. Sophomore Jasiman Dykes had four goals in that contest — two in each half — while Jordan Garrett, Danielle Valdez and Danielle Mendoza scored once apiece.
Meantime, Lora Esquivel and Lula Hita each picked up two assists.
“We made some changes and I think it showed,” Leatherwood said. “We hung in with Socorro, even though it was our third match of the day and their second.
“I felt like we played soccer again today, instead of playing ‘kickball.’”
The Lady Cats return to action on Saturday with a match at Las Cruces High.
