Young racers are revving up for the fifth annual Clovis Soap Box Derby.
The event, which is sponsored by the Clovis Rotary Club, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on Sycamore Street.
According to Director Larry Erwin, 15 participants ages 10 to 18 will vie for the right to represent Clovis in the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, in July.
Since the vehicles rely on gravity for power, the young racers will compete on a manmade hill that will begin at Yucca Junior High and finish at 14th Street.
Erwin said the racers will reach speeds up to 20 mph in kit cars painted a rainbow of colors.
“This year we have a patriotic car,” Erwin said, “with the entire nose painted with the American flag.”
According to Erwin, this year’s racers include two sets of 11-year-old twins and several girls as well.
