Candidate profiles: Curry County Commissioner

Frank Blackburn
Party: Democrat
Candidate for Curry County Commission, District 3

What is your background?
I moved to Clovis when I was 4 years old. I lived in Melrose for a year and attended Clovis public dchools. I married Marcella, a lifetime resident of Clovis. We have lived west of Clovis all of our adult lives. I have three daughters who all attended Clovis schools and still reside throughout New Mexico. I have eight grandchildren who are all in Clovis schools. I am currently the board president of ENMR.

Why are you running for county commissioner?
I have an interest in representing people. I have held many positions of service. I feel like I can benefit the citizens of the county with my experience.

What are the current issues in your district?
The quality of roads, overcrowding of the detention center and dead animals in the bar ditches.

How do you plan to address the issues?
People need a place to put those dead animals. Possibly heavier penalties for dumping should be considered.

We need more alternative programs for sentencing other than incarceration to alleviate jail overcrowding.

The road department is financed by the county’s portion of the state gasoline tax. We need to be more aggressive in obtaining funds for the road department.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I have been a song leader at my church for years. I have no formal training in music and can’t read notes, but I enjoy singing. I am also a big reader and I will overlook television to read.

Dusty Leatherwood
Party: Democrat
Candidate for Curry County Commissioner, District 3

What is your background?
I was born in Clovis and have spent most of my life here. I graduated from local schools. I have been a farrier for about 20 years. I am also an associate pastor.

Why are you running for county commissioner?
When the BRAC decision came back, I decided I wanted to get more involved in the community.

The groundbreaking of the Special Events Center is also important to me and being a county commissioner would enable me to educate residents on the benefits of having it in Curry County.

What are the current issues in your district?
The Special Events Center, roads and jail overcrowding.

How do you plan to address the issues?
I may not have a lot of experience, but you have to start somewhere. I plan to work for the county like I run my horseshoe business.

As for addressing the issues, there isn’t an easy way to fix the roads because the money comes from the state.

I like the alternative sentencing options that are being considered to alleviate the overcrowding at the detention center.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I have 12 grandchildren.
