PORTALES — Wayland Baptist’s Jonathan Reynoso homered on the second pitch of the game and went on to hit for the cycle, and the Pioneers never looked back Tuesday night in a 17-4 rout of Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound Field.
Wayland Baptist (24-20), which lost at home to ENMU 15-14 early in the season, clubbed out 24 hits in the rematch — including nine doubles, a triple and four home runs.
Reynoso finished 5-for-7, scoring four runs and driving in three. After his homer off Kelly Crain (5-5), he doubled in the second, singled in the fourth, hit a two-run double in the fifth and tripled leading off the seventh.
The top six batters in the Pioneers’ lineup went a combined 23-for-37 and accounted for all but one of the extra base hits.
Starter Gary Gates (2-1), the first of five Wayland pitchers, went two innings and was credited with the victory. He gave up a two-run single to Micah Bernhardt in the second.
ENMU’s only other runs came in the seventh, one scoring on an error and the other on a double by designated hitter Kelton Hayes.
The Hounds (21-23) managed only seven hits, and Hayes’ double was the lone extra-base knock. First baseman Jeff Roemer went 3-for-3.
ENMU finished a 10-game homestand with three wins and has now lost 19 of its last 24 since a 16-4 start.
The Hounds wrap up regular season play with four-game Lone Star Conference South Division series this weekend at Tarleton State, next weekend at home against Abilene Christian and April 28-29 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
