CNJ earns top Panhandle Press Association honors

CNJ staff

The Clovis News Journal picked up 14 awards on Saturday, including the two top prizes, in the Texas Panhandle Press Association’s 2005 Better Newspaper Contest.

CNJ staffers were honored with PPA’s General Excellence award for the fourth time in five years. The organization also presented its Community Service award to the CNJ for a series of reports on the future of Cannon Air Force Base. Staffers at the CNJ’s sister papers in Portales and Tucumcari assisted with the Cannon coverage.

CNJ photographers Eric Kluth, Sharna Johnson, staff writers Marlena Hartz and Ryn Gargulinski, Managing Editor Rick White and Editor David Stevens all won individual first-place awards.

Portales News-Tribune staffers picked up four awards from PPA, while the Quay County Sun in Tucumcari earned one, in addition to the laurels for Cannon coverage.

Texas’ Panhandle Press Association includes dozens of small-town newspapers throughout the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, southwest Kansas and eastern New Mexico. This weekend marked the organization’s 96th annual convention.
