On Thursday afternoon, an officer responded to a call of a gas meter that had been hit in the 1300 block of Hinkle Street. The officer found the damaged gas meter in the alley, which was leaking gas. After waiting for the gas company to secure the gas line, the officer observed tracks left by a vehicle and found pieces of trim and a broken grille and side light from a Buick. He gathered the pieces and placed them in his car. With another officer’s assistance, a Buick was located with damage consistent with the items found, and a juvenile driver was placed under arrest. Questioned about the incident, the juvenile initially said he had been involved in a traffic accident in an intersection on 13th Street. After being informed of the evidence found in the alley near the gas meter, the juvenile admitted that he had cut down the alley and his speed caused him to swerve and strike the gas meter and a pile of wood. He was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and booked for careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
