LOGAN — The Logan Longhorns hung on down the stretch to beat Fort Sumner 67-65 Saturday night for the Class 1A Region A tournament boys championship.
Logan (24-4) snapped Fort Sumner’s 17-game winning streak, getting 28 points from senior post Jake Abercrombie. The Longhorns were the last team to beat the Foxes (23-4), coming in the semifinals of the EPAC Tournament in Portales in early January.
Both teams have qualified for the Class 1A tournament next week in Albuquerque. Seedings for the tournament will be released later today by the NMAA.
Austin Whetten and Drew Perez added 12 points apiece for Logan. Senior Stephen Gallegos scored a career-best 23 points to lead the Foxes, while seniors Jeremy Gauna and Derek Dimitroff added 17 and 12, respectively.
Logan opened a 23-13 lead in the first minute of the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Brenton Williamson and 3-of-4 free throws by Dimitroff sparked a 14-2 run that put the Foxes in front late in the half.
The Longhorns went back in front 34-31 at the intermission and never relinquished the lead after that, although it got interesting.
Logan had leads of 61-52 and 66-60 down the stretch, but Dimitroff converted a steal into a 3-point play with 1:06 to go to cut the margin in half. Dimitroff’s basket with 45 seconds left made it 66-65, and Fort Sumner’s pressure helped cause a traveling violation seven seconds later.
The teams then exchanged turnovers, and Longhorns senior guard Josh Franco converted the second of two free throws with five seconds left. Fort Sumner’s Matt Sena had a 3-pointer for the win from the corner as time expired, but the shot was just long.
Class 2A girls — At Dexter, the Texico Lady Wolverines captured the Region C championship with a 41-33 victory over the host Lady Demons.
Senior Lori Richardson led a balanced attack for Texico (23-6) with 10 points. The Lady Wolverines are making their first trip to the state meet since completing a 3-peat in 2002.
No one scored in double figures for Dexter (22-6). Neither team made a 3-point shot in the contest.
Class 1A girls — At Elida, the host Lady Tigers jumped all over Melrose and cruised past the Lady Buffaloes 53-33 for the Region A championship.
