PORTALES — A 19-year-old Roosevelt County man was shot in the leg sometime Sunday night in Portales, but police aren’t sure exactly where the incident occurred or who shot him.
Police were summoned to Roosevelt General Hospital by an emergency room desk clerk at 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The clerk reported a patient with a gunshot wound that “was not self-inflicted.”
A police report states Jimmy L. Baca said he was walking in the Lindsey Park area when he was shot.
Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said no suspects had been identified in the shooting as of Tuesday evening. He said the investigation was going slow because Baca had to undergo surgery to remove a bullet from his upper thigh and he was still recovering from the operation.
“We are getting sketchy information from our victim,” Berry said. “We have no exact location of where it occurred at.”
Berry said police believe the round removed from Baca’s leg to be a 9mm bullet, likely from a handgun but until a ballistics report is returned they won’t know that for sure.
“We do have some other people to talk to and getting a good statement from him (the victim) will help,” Berry said.
Berry said several possible locations where the shooting may have occurred were canvassed Sunday night by police without much evidence being gleaned.
Berry said Baca, whose address is listed at 231 S. Roosevelt Road R, is expected to recover from his wounds.
