Carolina L. Griego, 93, of Fort Sumner, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center following an illness.
She was born May 18, 1912, in Canada, Colo., to Albaro Lopez and Ruperta Sandoval.
She attended school at Alamo. She married Susano Griego on Sept. 4, 1929, in Santa Rosa. They ranched northeast of Fort Sumner until his death in 1949. Following her husband’s death, she moved into Fort Sumner, where she raised her family.
She was a homemaker, a member of American Legion Unit 21 auxiliary, where she received the sergeant-at-arms medal. She was a devoted member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Albaro Griego; a grandson Michael Griego; a daughter-in-law, Esther Griego; four brothers Isaac, Max, Jack and Nick Lopez; eight sisters, Adelaida, Rosario, Maria and Alisia Roybal, Olympia Lujan, Juanita and Pablita Lopez, and Dulsenea Gutierrez.
Survivors include a daughter, Crusita Sena (and husband, Ramon) of Clovis; three sons, Nicanor Griego (Jo); Juan Griego (Viola) of Fort Sumner and Sam Griego of Las Vegas, N.M.; a nephew raised as a son, Eddie Roybal (Irene) of Las Vegas, N.M.; a daughter-in-law, Charlotte Griego of Fort Sumner; a sister, Louisa Gonzales of Fort Sumner; an aunt, Barbara Griego of Albuquerque; two sisters-in-law, Margie Tapia and Eloisa Lopez; and a brother-in-law, Jose Martinez.
Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner.
Father Gerald Johnson will officiate.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Rob, Johnny Ray, Kurt, Nicolas and Jerry Griego and Daniel Michael Sena.
Visitation hours will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
