Nell A. Duke, 95, of Fort Sumner, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Retirement Ranch Care Center.
She was born Nov. 26, 1910, in Marietta, Okla., to Walter and Susie Ellen Welborn. Following high school, she took a business course and went to work at Ware’s Department Store in Littlefield, Texas. She later worked for Southwestern Public Service.
She married Carl H. Duke on Oct. 22, 1937, in Littlefield. They made their home in the Fort Sumner valley where they farmed for many years. She worked as the office manager for the ASC office in Fort Sumner for 13 years. She also worked at the De Baca County Courthouse in the county clerk’s office and the district clerk’s office until her retirement in 1979. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church since 1946; a member of Rebekahs, United Methodist Women and the Fort Sumner Women’s Club.
In 1980, she was inducted into the De Baca County Hall of Fame among Women of the Year, family members said.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; sisters, Louise McCoy and Irene Fulton; and niece, Pat Peterson.
Survivors include two great-nieces, Jo Donna Terry of Muleshoe and Jan Templar of Tulia, Texas; and a great-nephew, James Peterson of Long Beach, Calif.
Rev. Wesley Holland is officiating.
Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
