Juan Astorga, 74, of Portales, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at Roosevelt General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Ramos, Mexico, to Otilia and Manuel Astorga. He grew up in Durango, Mexico. At 14, he moved to the Unites States to work in farming in various places. For the past 12 years he made his home in Portales. Family members said he enjoyed participating in a number of the activities at the Portales Adult Day Care Center. As a young man in Mexico he raised roosters and raced horses.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his sons, Marcelo Astorga of Portales, Juan Astorga, Jr. of Missouri, Kan., Antonio Astorga of Juarez, Mexico, and Jesus Astorga of Odessa, Texas; daughters, Manuela Astorga, Lupe Astorga and Susanna Astorga, all of Odessa, Julia Astorga of Juarez, Mexico, and Sanjuana Astorga of Torreon, Mexico; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers; and eight sisters.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.
Jesus Espinoza will officiate at both services
Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
His friends at the Portales Adult Day Care Center will be honorary pallbearers.
