PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer coach Carlos Elizondo has announced the signing of seven players to national letters-of-intent for next year, while women’s coach Travis McCorkle has added four players to the five already announced earlier.
For the men, all the signees are freshmen. They include defender Dustin Flores of Alamogordo (Mayfield High School); midfielder-defender Tyler Hart of Cambridge, Ontario; midfielder-forward Ryan McClanahan of Las Cruces (Mayfield High School); defender Michael Morin of Bloomfield; midfielder-forward Patrick Stack of Alamogordo (Alamogordo High School); midfielder Max Stainmez of Holland Landing, Ontario, and midfielder-forward James Stephens of Albuquerque (Eldorado High School).
Flores lettered for three years at Mayfield, and in 2005 earned all-district and Class 5A all-state honors. His teammate, McClanahan, had 33 goals and 53 assists in his career at Mayfield, earning 5A all-district and all-state honors and district player of the year honors as a senior, and all-district honors as a junior.
Hart and Stainmez had successful high school careers in Ontario, and have also played on several club teams. Hart was his team’s MVP and junior athlete of the year in 2003-04, while Stainmetz was his high school team’s MVP each of the last three seasons.
Morin was chosen Bloomfield’s defensive player of the year and earned all-district honors as a senior, while stack was a four-year player at Alamogordo and earned second-team 5A all-state honors in 2005. Stephens played four years at Eldorado and was a second-team all-district choice in 2005.
Three of the women’s signees will be freshmen next season — forward Megan Luevano and Leslie Weber of Alamogordo and forward-midfielder-defender Michelle Sumner of Los Lunas. The other is forward Amy Wilcox of Scottsdale, Ariz., who is transferring from Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix and will be a junior.
Luevno was a first-team all-district selection and a 5A honorable mention all-state choice as a senior, while Weber was an all-district choice three times.
At Los Lunas, Sumner led her team in scoring all four seasons, finishing with 49 goals and a school-record 31 assists. She earned 5A all-state honors twice and all-district honors three times.
In two season at Paradise Valley, Wilcox had 12 goals and four assists. She played all four years at Scottsdale’s Payson High School, recording 53 goals and 14 assists in her prep career.
