ROSWELL — Once the Clovis High Lady Wildcats backed off a little bit, they took over the game.
Limiting Roswell High to just 10 field goals for the game, Clovis pulled away during a strong third-quarter run and beat the Lady Coyotes 59-38 on Friday night, stretching their winning streakto 11 games.
The Lady Wildcats (22-2), ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, were in control from the start but had to back off their defense a bit after starters Ebony Bunton and Brittany Blackmon each picked up two fouls in the first quarter.
Roswell (12-12) stayed as close as it did in the game by sinking 17-of-19 free throws — most of them before halftime.
“We got in a little bit of foul trouble,” Clovis girls coach Miles Watters said. “We kept putting them on the free throw line, and they’re a great free throw shooting team.”
Blackmon finished with 18 points for the Lady Cats, while Bunton added 14 and senior Aimee Hilburn chipped in 12.
Bunton scored eight of her points in the first quarter, but the Lady Coyotes were still within 29-22 at halftime. Blackmon then scored eight of her points in the third period, fueling a 20-5 run that put the game out of reach.
“We executed really well in that third quarter,” Watters said. “We shot a high percentage. We did a great job executing on the offense end, and on defense we took them out of their offense.
“I told the kids that we’re not going to blow everybody out,” he said. “We’re going to have to be able to play 32 minutes in some games.”
Samantha Matta scored 12 points and Justine Ledesma added 11 for the Lady Coyotes.
