Alton M. Ward, 74, of Clovis, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
He was born July 5, 1931, to David S. and Fannie Riley Ward in Portales. He married Betty Ann Cherry on Aug. 9, 1948, in Amarillo. He worked in asphalt construction for K. Barnett & Sons for 50 years and was of the Baptist faith. Family members said he was influential in the development of Play Inc. and coached for Play Inc. football.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Jerry Ward.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Ward; daughters, Judy Herring (and husband Tim) of Hereford, Texas, and Charyl Ward of Mustang, Okla.; sons, Daryl Ward (Tina) of Clovis and Kevin Ward (Karen) of Hobbs; daughter-in-law, Sandy Ward of San Diego; sisters, Wanda Scott of Clovis, Hazel Longstreet of Arlington, Texas, and Mildred Holloway of Sherman, Texas; aunt, Dorthy Bohannon of Clovis; uncle, B.F. “Pistol” Ward of Los Lunas; seven grandchildren, Tyler Chitwood, Michelle Southard, Ian Ward, Leigha Ward, Michael Ward, Jeffery Ward and Scott Ward; nine great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
Vaughn Gossman and Kenny Barnett are officiating. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be David Rochel, Howard Monasco, Jeremy Barnett, Fernando Ramos, Justin Monasco and Alfred Ortiz.
Honorary Pallbearers are K. Barnett, Billy Dan Barnett, Louis Ulibarri, Kenny Barnett, Jim Dow, Ronnie Scott, Mike Shots, Caleb Barnett, Larry “George” Barnett, Milburn Johnston and all former and present employees of K. Barnett & Sons.
