ALBUQUERQUE — Four members of the Clovis High’s Class 5A state runnerup football team have been chosen to play in the New Mexico High School Coaches Association’s Class 4-5A all-star football game, scheduled for July 28 at UNM Stadium.
The Wildcats’ representatives on the 30-member South squad are Chase Denton at guard, Aaron Simon at tackle and Chris Finch at tight end on offense, and Devin Sweet in the secondary on defense. In addition, longtime CHS coach Eric Roanhaus was chosen to lead the South squad.
The North’s coach is San Juan Mendoza of St. Pius.
Despite a 21-0 win for the North last year, the South leads the all-time large-school series 39-19-4.
Five members each from Texico and Fort Sumner have been chosen to play in the Class 1A-2A all-star contest, scheduled for June 10 in Silver City. The two teams met in the Class 1A state championship game at Fort Sumner in November, with the host Foxes posting a 14-7 victory.
Texico’s representatives on the South roster, all on offense, are Michael Johnson at center, Aaron Vaughan at guard, Zach Morgan at tackle, Zane Anderson at quarterback and Eddy Segovia at running back.
Fort Sumner’s players, chosen to the North squad, include Stephen Gallegos at tackle, Derek Dimitroff at quarterback and Jeremy Gauna at running back on offense and Richard Canales at linebacker and Ryan Fikany in the secondary on defense.
Coaches for the game are Gerald Burns of Carrizozo for the North and David Burns of Crownpoint for the South. In last year’s game at Silver City, the South rolled to a 48-0 win over the North.
