Reporter’s notebook: Wal-Mart publishes local’s recipe

Carolyn Deweese was surprised to learn recently he recipe for chili casserole is included in the fifth annual Wal-Mart employee cookbook.

Wal-Mart included Deweese’s recipe along with more than 80 others — chosen from thousands of submissions by Wal-Mart associates. The goal, according to a Wal-Mart press release, was to produce a cookbook “reflecting the flavors and favorites of local communities” in an attempt to represent the cultural diversity of it’s employees and the regions where they live and work.

In its fifth edition, the Wal-Mart Family Cookbook is sold in all Wal-Mart stores, timed for the holiday season.

Deweese said she adapted the casserole from a recipe her sister-in-law shared with her more 10 ten years ago. It is now the casserole is a favorite dish for her family.

“My husband doesn’t like casseroles,” she said, “but he likes this one.”

Deweese said her family eats it more during the winter than any other time of year.
