SHALLOWATER, Texas — A balanced effort gave Portales its first win of the season, a 50-39 win over Farwell in the consolation bracket of the Shallowater Shootout.
Portales (1-2) plays against Lubbock Cooper today in the 1 p.m. (MST) fifth-place game at Shallowater High School.
“They’re really young,” Portales coach Mark Gallegos said of Farwell (4-3), which trailed 30-20 against Portales at the half. “They weren’t very big inside.”
Daniel Aranda was Portales’ only double-figure scorer with 10 points, but the Rams got a balanced effort on offense. Hunter Rackler scored seven while four players — Josh Gonzales, Todd McBroom, Jerrod Long and Chris Adkins — all had six.
“Everyone got a lot of minutes and that was good,” Gallegos said.
Still, Gallegos said he wasn’t pleased with a sporadic effort from the team.
“We play good in spots,” Gallegos said, “but to be successful, we’ve got to learn to play all four quarters.”
Derrick Chandler led the Steers with 12 points. Farwell meets Tulia (Texas) in the seventh-place game at 10 a.m. (MST).
