Hernandez earns Head Start honor
Teacher Cesarea Hernandez was named Clovis Head Start Center Employee of the Quarter, according to an organization press release.

The award is “given to an employee who excels in their work and whose conduct in displayed in a professional and positive manner,” the release said. Head Start is a federally funded program serving low income and disable children, the release said.

State coalition submitting budget
A coalition of professional organizations, the New Mexico Education Partners, will submit formal budget request prior to next year’s Legislative session for the first time in history, according to a New Mexico Education Partners press release.

The coalition includes the New Mexico PTA, the New Mexico School Board Association and the New Mexico National Education Association, the release said.

Their budget requests focus primarily on funding for programs to encourage student and parent education participation at home, according to the release. They also support of the three-tiered licensure system, the release said.

ENMU professors develop buffers
Two Eastern New Mexico University assistant professors developed synthesized compounds to be commercialized by the University of New Mexico Science and Technology Corp., according to an ENMU press release.

The compounds will be used as biological buffers, the release said. Robert Long, assistant professor of chemistry, and Newton Hilliard, assistant professor of chemistry and graduate coordinator for chemistry, discovered the compounds while investigating alternate production methodologies for biological buffers. Through the agreement, STC is enabled to take the new technology through the patenting process and to begin researching markets, the release said.

The new buffers have lower pH levels and have significant advantages over those currently available for lab work, the release said.
