Texico, Fort Sumner advance in 1A playoffs

TEXICO — Texico’s bid for a third-straight Class 1A state title started slowly Saturday as the Wolverines had nearly as many fumbles as first downs in the game’s first 14 minutes.

The Wolverines recovered from their butterfingers ballhandling by halftime and rolled to a 53-0 win over Ramah in a first-round contest at the Field of Hopes and Dreams.

Justin Garrison rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns and added a pair on interceptions for the District 3-1A champion Wolverines, who have won four straight.

Seeded second in the playoffs, Texico (6-4) plays at third-seeded Capitan (6-5) on Friday in a semifinal matchup. Capitan beat Escalante 23-0 Saturday.

“We might have a little bit overconfident coming into the game,” said Garrison, who scored on runs of 5, 6 and 44 yards in the second half. “The coaches talked to us at halftime and got us motivated, and we came out in the second half and played a lot better.”

Questa spent most of the game trying to throw the ball out of shotgun formation with little success.

Under constant pressure, Questa quarterback Kris Romero managed to complete just 3 of 19 passes and was intercepted five times. Garrison said the Wolverines were able to play tight coverage because Romero didn’t have a lot of time to throw the ball.

“Our defensive line did a great job of getting a pass rush.” Garrison said. “It starts with the pass rush, and our linebackers did a great job of dropping back in pass coverage.”

Questa (2-7) was limited to 88 yards and five first downs.
Zane Anderson added three short touchdowns runs for the Wolverines, who led 27-0 at halftime.

Texico lost the services of senior running back Eddy Segovia early to an ankle injury.

“We told the kids that bad things happen in life and you have to keep moving forward,” Texico coach Mike Prokop said. “We talked to them about when Eddy went down, we need to step it up.”
