Base contracting security company
Cannon Air Force Base is contracting a private company to provide security at the base gates starting Dec. 1, according to Capt. Andre Kok of Cannon’s public affairs.
Non-military security will be employed due to the high deployment rate of Air Force security forces and increased 911 security requirements, Kok said.
Contracted security will fill the void left by security airmen deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, Kok said. Of the 175 security personnel stationed at Cannon, between 30 to 80 can be deployed at one time for six months, Kok said.
Since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom until last winter, the New Mexico Army National Guard provided gate security at Cannon.
Cannon has not been notified as to which security company will be contracted to check identification passes, search delivery vehicles and write temporary passes, Kok said.
The contracted guards will receive weapons training from the Air Force, Kok said.
