Inmate transported to hospital
A 53-year-old male prisoner at the Curry County Adult Detention Center was transported Tuesday to Plains Regional Medical Center, Curry County Undersheriff Doug Bowman said.

Bowman and Detention Center officials said they did not know why Lorenzo Chavez of Clovis was taken to the hospital.

Chavez’ sister, Joann Maes, said when she arrived at the hospital she was met in the lobby by a sheriff’s deputy. The deputy told Maes and two other relatives Chavez was fine and he was being treated intravenously for dehydration.

Maes said she was told by the deputy she was not allowed to visit her brother.

Chavez was booked at the detention center on Aug. 10 on a felony conviction of receiving stolen property. He is being held without bond.

Melrose woman convicted for meth
A Melrose woman was convicted by a Curry County jury Monday of manufacturing methamphetamine and child abuse, according to a press release from the District Attorney’s Office.

Margo Smith, 36, was one of four adults arrested during an April 3 search of a Melrose residence by the Region V Task Force, the release said.

Smith’s 4 year-old daughter was sleeping on the floor of the house at the time of the raid, the release said.

The child was taken into protective custody to placed in foster care. Smith faces a maximum sentence of six years in prison, according the release.
