The search for a Clovis Community College president has begun.
The college Board of Trustees on Wednesday appointed members to a presidential search screening committee.
Interim CCC President Becky Rowley, who was at the meeting, said she will apply for the job.
“It’s the board prerogative to do a search and it’s certainly not unusual,” Rowley said Wednesday evening from the college’s library.
She said she believes she is a strong contender: She is a 1982 Clovis High School graduate; she is also a former English teacher who got her first break teaching at the college; she has been employed at the college for more than a decade and previously served as CCC executive vice president.
Former CCC President Beverlee McClure stepped down from the position in August to accept a state position as New Mexico’s first Secretary of Higher Education. She now serves as a liaison for universities and colleges across the state and seeks to increase access to higher education.
Rowley was elected by the board to serve as interim president at the college. Four members voted in favor of the move; member Robert Lydick abstained from that vote.
CCC Board Chairman Russell Muffley said trustees on Wednesday decided it best to open the search to the public.
“The board felt that we needed to search for the best possible candidate. If you don’t look, you don’t know what’s out there,” Muffley said.
Muffley said any candidate should possess the ability to deal with the state Legislature because a majority of the college’s funding is state derived.
The search committee will narrow applicants to three or five, who will then be interviewed by the board, Muffley said.
He estimates the search will cost around $50,000 due to advertising expenses and the cost of hosting possible candidates.
Board members decided Wednesday to include the presidential salary range — $110,000 to $140,000, according to Muffley — in advertisements for the position. Muffley said he hopes to hire a president before the start of the semester next fall.
Members of the Clovis Community College presidential search screening committee are:
