The competition wasn’t what was anticipated, but Clovis High cross country coach Brian Stacy hopes his teams at least picked up some confidence in Saturday’s CHS Invitational at Ned Houk Park.

The boys beat District 4-5A rival Hobbs 21-34 in a two-team battle while the girls won a three-team race with 18 points, besting Hobbs (44) and Bovina (73).

Neither the Hereford boys nor the Canyon girls showed for the meet, but Stacy preferred to focus on the positive.

“It’s almost a good boost for these kids,” Stacy said of the team victories. “And this meet kind of shows us where Hobbs is at.”

Freshman Caitlin Waters took the girls race, leading a 1-2-4-5-6 finish for the Lady Wildcats. She ran the three-mile race in an even 21 minutes, three seconds better than eighth-grader and fellow Yucca Junior High student Michelle Schenk.

Hobbs’ J.J. Ramos took the boys race, also three miles, in a time of 17 minutes, 39 seconds. He was more than a minute ahead of the Wildcats’ top finisher, Mike Wareham, who was second in 18:45.

Overall, Stacy said he was pleased with the way things went.

“The girls ran as well as they could,” he said. “But it’s early in the season. Everybody’s going to have something to work on.”

Bovina’s lone entrant in the boys varsity race, Isai Saucedo, finished third in 18:55. On the girls’ side, the Fillies were led by a seventh-place showing from Hilda Quintero in 22:13.

The Lady Cats took the girls junior varsity team title, finishing with 20 points to 35 for Bovina — which had 28 of the 38 runners competing in that race. Clovis’ Kelsey Wymore was the individual winner in 22:39.

Hobbs edged the Cats 29-36 for boys JV team honors. James Dickenson ran 19:15 and led a 2-3-4 Clovis finish behind winer Jacob Lozano of Hobbs.
