Zias post first volleyball wins of season

ABILENE, Texas — Senior Lindsay Schiely capped a strong performance with a match-clinching kill Friday to give Eastern New Mexico University a 30-16, 23-30, 27-30, 30-26, 18-16 win over Texas Woman’s in the Lone Star Conference’s volleyball crossover tournament on Friday.

Earlier, the Zias (2-6) picked up their first win of the sason, sweeping past Southwestern Oklahoma 30-20, 30-22, 30-21.

Schiely finished with 24 kills, two block solos and four block assists against Texas Woman’s (6-6). She had 11 kills against Southwestern Oklahoma (3-9).

The Zias finish play in the event today with a 10 a.m. (MDT) match against Cameron.

Men’s soccer — ENMU pushed Midwestern State, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, but the unbeaten Indians scored on a penalty kick by junior Keegan Hudson in the 71st minute to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Greyhounds in a Southwest Soccer Conference matchup on Friday in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Sophomore goalkeeper Leif Craddock was credited with 13 saves for the Hounds (2-5-1, 1-3-0 SSC) and kept the Indians (5-0, 4-0) off the scoreboard until Brandon Swartzendruber tied the match from just inside the 18-yard box late in the half.

The Hounds’ goal came in the 31st minute with Keith Vargas doing the honors on an assist by Jonathan Holman. It marked the first time the Indians have trailed this season.
ENMU plays St. Edward’s on Sunday in Austin, Texas.

Women’s soccer — The Zias improved to 4-3 with a non-conference 2-0 over University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma on Friday at Chickasha, Okla.

ENMU got both of its goals in the first half, then held off UASO as sophomore Amy Holtman collected the shutout. She had two saves in the match.

The Zias’ first goal wasscored by Karly Parkins in the 19th minute, redirecting a shot by Megan Dozier. Anna Funck followed with an unassisted tally at the 24:16 mark.

ENMU completes its weekend trip today with a 1 p.m. match at St. Gregory’s, Okla.
