CASPER, Wyo. — Eastern New Mexico University senior Dusty Higgins and sophomore Brittany Bennett came up just a little short of reaching Saturday’s short-go finals in the College National Finals Rodeo at the Casper Events Center.

Higgins finished 13th in bull riding with his score of 79, attained in the second-go Tuesday. The top 12 go to the finals. Higgins failed to score on either of his other two rides and came up one-half point short of 12th-place Matthew Boyers of Murray State for the final spot in the finals.

Higgins’ performance contributed 80 points to the ENMU men’s team total. Going into Saturday night’s finals, the Greyhounds were 21st with 125 points.

Tarleton State was running away with the men’s team title with 800 points to 380 for second-place Montana Western.
ENMU’s other 45 points in men’s competition came in team roping, where senior James Gililland teamed with Tarleton State’s Clayton Jackson to finish 18th.

In women’s barrel racing, Bennett placed 15th with an overall time of 44.16 seconds. She was .17 seconds out of 12th place.

Bennett’s effort did not result in any team points for the Zias. Nevada-Las Vegas held the women’s team lead going into the short-go with 260 points, while Tarleton State was second with 221 2/3.
