Everett H. Gist, Jr., 77, of Dalhart, Texas, died Sunday, May 8, 2005.
He was born on Feb. 11, 1928, in Sulfer, Okla. to Everett Horace Sr. and Myrtle Bee (Higgs) Gist.
He was raised in Texhoma, Okla., and attended school on the Texas side and Oklahoma side. He served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1952. He married Betty Jan Ledbetter on June 16, 1955, in Clayton. He worked for Fred Sweet Ranch for many years in Texhoma and Hitch Feed yard in Guymon, Okla. He and his wife operated the Bryan’s Corner Restaurant in Bryan’s Corn, Okla. from 1965 to 1969. He graduated for Fort Smith School of Auctioneers in 1971.
He worked at several ranches and feedlots in the Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma areas before making Dalhart his home in 1979. He retired in 1988.
He attended Liberty Baptist Church in Dalhart.
Family members said he loved cattle and horses. He team roped and broke horses.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister Evelyn Gist; a daughter, Samuella; and two grandchildren, Aaron and Deidre Hininger.
Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Hininger (and husband, Michael) of Dalhart; three sons, Billy Gist (Honey Sue) of Bovina, Delmer Cole (Cindy) of Shamrock, Texas, and Mike Gist (Judy) of Hill Air Force Base, Utah; a brother, Billy Gist of Polson, Mont.; two sisters, Wanda Gammell of Sturgis, S.D., and Phyllis Garner of Topeka, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The Rev. James Washburn and Rev. Dan Martin will officiate the services.
