Wilma Skinner, 88, of Portales, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born March 31, 1917, in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Maggie and William Herbert Hays.
Her family moved from Oklahoma when she was a girl, but she maintained a special feeling for her native state all of her life. The family was living in Sweetwater, Texas, when she graduated from high school in 1935. She married Mark Skinner on Sept. 30, 1936, in Sayre, Okla. They were married more than 51 years before his death.
They moved to the Rogers area in 1938. Family members said she was a devoted wife and mother and loved the duties of making a home and raising a family. She also maintained a close bond with her siblings. She taught children’s Sunday school classes and was active in the Dora Church of Christ. For a number of years she was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed art classes and other activities at the Dora Senior Citizens. Family members said she was caring and generous and took her civic duties seriously; she was fun loving and had a quick wit.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, J. D. Hays; two sisters, Luava Radcliff and Leona Stevens; and by her husband.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Wayne Skinner (and wife Myra) of Dora; one daughter Phyllis Ann Stroup (Adrian) of Dora; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, C. H. Hays of Portales and Herbert Hays, Jr. of Amarillo; and one sister, Emma Talley of Portales.
Scott Reeves and John Brumfield will officiate services.
Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Brady Stroup, Westen Stroup, Tyler Stroup, Jesse Clark, Eldon Hays, Marty Peters, Adam Skinner, Chance Skinner, Shane Dill and Kenneth Shirley.
