Reporter’s notebook: Local man meets President Bush

Animated, humorous and erudite.

Those are the words Clovis Republican Rube Render used to describe President George W. Bush’s speaking style at a town hall meeting last week in Albuquerque.

“I was very impressed with the President’s speaking ability,” Render said.

Rube and his wife Marge traveled to the town hall meeting that brought together New Mexico legislators, concerned citizens, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and the President to discuss Social Security reform.

Render even briefly met face-to-face with Bush and McCain.
“God bless you sir,” Render said he told the President as he signed his ticket.

According the Render, Bush responded, “Thank you … I appreciate your comment.”

In the after-meeting chaos, McCain slipped by Render without getting a photo. But Marge Render caught the prominent senator and kindly asked him to go back and take a picture with the man “in the hat.”

“He did that out the kindness of his heart,” Rube Render said, noting McCain made the effort for a nice photo.
