Mr. Carroll D. Hunton, 79, of Portales, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Farwell Convalescent Center.
He was born on April 17, 1925, in Forrest, to Ethel and Ludvil E. Hunton.
He grew up in Forrest and graduated from high school there in 1943. He served in the US Navy, but returned to the family farm in 1946. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico Junior College in 1951 with a degree in business and economics.
He married Wenonah Thorn on Feb. 6, 1956. He owned and operated the Portales Credit Bureau for 14 years. He was a member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ, the Sons of the American Revolution, Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce, and the Republican Party. He moved to Albuquerque in 1969, and returned to Clovis in 1978. He returned to Portales in 1983. He retired in the late 1980’s. Family members said he began writing as a hobby, and had recently completed his autobiography.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Esten, Paul, J.W., and L.E. Hunton; two sisters, Velma James and Mozelle Nance; and two daughters, Elaine Hunton and Mary Jane Bowman.
Survivors include his wife of Farwell; two sons, David Hunton of Portales and Tommy Hunton (and wife, Edna) of Bakersfield, Calif.; seven grandsons, Paul, Matt, Shawn, Ryan and Jason Hunton, Troy Testin, and Chase Graves; a granddaughter, Casey Graves; a great-grandson, Tre Hunton; a great-granddaughter, Emma Hunton; a brother, Wayne Hunton (Bess) of Clovis; and a sister, Lois Baker (Nile) of Roswell.
David Bennett and Bob Wood will officiate the services.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. (CST) Wednesday at Lazbuddie Cemetery in Lazbuddie, Texas.
Pallbearers are Rick Chandler, Garvin Thorn, Brad Hunton, Mike Blackburn, Mark Gammon, and Doug Harrison.
