WOLFFORTH, Texas — Clovis survived early foul trouble, an off night by its leading scorer and a team bent on redemption to stay unbeaten.
Aimee Hilburn scored 13 points and Brittany Blackmon added 11 as Clovis held off Frenship 48-46 Tuesday in a girls basketball contest.
Clovis beat the state-ranked Lady Tigers 68-46 in December.
“We embarrassed them the last time we played, so we knew they’d come out with a lot of energy,” Clovis coach Miles Watters said. “We knew that was going to happen but for some reason we came out flat-footed.”
Hilburn’s 6-foot jumper off a pass from sophomore Tori Northcutt put Clovis (14-0) ahead for good at 46-44 with a little more than a minute left in the game.
After a Frenship miss, Hilburn scored on a layup on another fed from Northcutt with seven seconds left to put Clovis up by four.
“We never lost our composure and that was good to see,” Watters said. “Down the stretch we were able to execute and score on a set play.”
Ashleigh Brady, a 6-foot senior who signed to play at Division I Bradley University, scored a game-high 22 points for Frenship (16-5), which used a 12-2 run late in the first half en route to a 22-20 halftime lead.
“She’s unbelievable,” Watters said. “She made some shots off the dribble that we couldn’t really do anything about.”
Hilburn picked up two fouls in the first four minutes of the game and sat out the rest of the half. Meanwhile, Frenship was double- and triple-teaming Blackmon, the Lady Cats’ leading scorer, in the post.
Watters said the play of Roxanne Luera (two 3-pointers and eight points) and Vanessa O’Neal (six points) helped keep Clovis in the game in the first half.
