Noel Paige Lanci, 22, of Portales, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, in Portales.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1978, in St. Francis, Kan., to Tom Lanci and Taunia Locker. She attended school in Great Bend, Kan., where she was active in 4-H and orchestra, as well as spending hours training and showing her Appaloosa horse. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in archeology at the University of Kansas and graduated with honors in 2002. While attending the University of Kansas, she was selected to participate in several special research projects and excavations in Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and an international project in Hungary. After graduating, she was employed as an archeologist by the Office of Antiquities for the State of New Mexico in Santa Fe. In the fall of 2004, she was accepted to advanced studies at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales to pursue a master’s degree in Cultural Resource Management.
Family members said her love of the outdoors and all of nature was apparent in everything she did and her favorite times were spent with her dogs, horses, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Katie Lanci; grandfather, Melvin Walz; great-grandmother, Lydia Walz; great-grandfather, Budd Ewing; and great-great-grandmother, Laura Rudder.
Survivors include her parents; step-father, Lawrence Locker; grandparents, Daniel Lanci, Jacque and John Hayes; great-grandmother, Barbara Ewing; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Burial will be at Moriarty.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Humane Society, 1805 E. 19th St., Lawrence, Kan. 66044, or to the Friends of Eastern Foundation, Noel Lanci Memorial, at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.
