Commissioner Tim Ashley will propose an intent to adopt an ordinance to increase the county gross receipts tax at today’s meeting.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the county courthouse on Main Street.

Ashley said state Legislature authorizes Curry County commissioners to pass a 1/8 percent increase that would take effect in July.

The commission will vote to adopt an ordinance that would allow the public to petition or give their input at meetings. If approved, commissioners will vote on the ordinance in 30 days.

The increase would be subject to a “negative referendum,” meaning the commission would not have to place it on a ballot before enacting it.

Ashley said the money is necessary to fund the jails and pay increases in the sheriff’s department.

Also on the meeting agenda:
• Jail Administrator Don Burdine will present an addendum to a joint powers agreement with Parmer County.
• District Attorney Matt Chandler is requesting more than $1,500 for renovations to the district attorney’s office.
