Melvin Sachs, 90, of Clovis, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Laurel Ridge Healthcare in Clovis.
He was born on June 18, 1914, at the XIT Excarbada Ranch House in the southwest corner of Deaf Smith County, Texas, to George and Clara Sachs.
When he was 3 the family moved to his grandfather’s farm home in the Rhea community in Parmer County. In December 1920, Melvin’s father died. The family stayed on the farm, renting out the land. When he was 13, he drove the family to Indiana in a 1926 Whippett. At 15-years-old he left school to take over the farm. He married Esther Wagner in 1954. He retired from farming in 1988. They moved to Farwell. In 2000, they moved to Clovis. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He worked with young people for more than a decade in the Walther League, the Lutheran Camp at Ceta Glen Canyon near Canyon, Texas. He worked with the Lutheran Laymen’s League for 15 years and as a volunteer in Station 67 of the Lutheran Braille Workers, Inc. Family members said he enjoyed church work, fishing and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife; a sister, Irene Gober of Lubbock; a daughter, Betty Christ of Richmond, Texas; two stepsons, Charles Wagner of Fallon, Nev. and Steve Wagner of Brighton, Colo.; three grandsons, Timothy Christ of Harlingen, Texas, Joshua Christ of Richmond, Texas and Tyler Wagner of Felton, Calif.; three granddaughters, Jessica Christ of Richmond, Texas, Tami Fincher of Oceanside, Calif. and Lisa Wagner of Fallon, Nev; and three great-grandsons.
The Rev. David Symm will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Rhea Cemetery in Rhea, Texas.
