PORTALES — Junior Lindsay Schiely and sophomore Grace George combined for 23 kills and just two hitting errors Tuesday night, and Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team ran its winning streak to eight matches by pounding winless Wayland Baptist 30-18, 32-30, 30-15 at Greyhound Arena.
Schiely had 14 kills and George added nine, each making one error, as the Zias (9-2) dominated the Pioneers in the first and third games while rallying from game point to win the middle set.
Eastern appeared to be cruising in the second game, but Wayland Baptist (0-9) took advantage of some Zias miscues to pull in front 29-27. Senior middle blocker Emilie Rodman and Schiely had back-to-back kills to tie the score, and a WBU error put the Zias in front.
After the Pioneers tied the score, Kelley McGinty’s kill put the Zias in front for good and they won it on a WBU hitting error on the final point.
The Zias controlled the first game from the start, helped along by five WBU service errors.
In the third game, the score was tied 6-6 before the Zias went on a 5-0 run with senior Anna Bellum serving to take control. Bellum capped the rally with back-to-back aces.
ENMU stayed in control and finished off the game on a 7-0 run capped by Margie Goble’s service ace which clipped the net and fell in on Wayland’s side of the court.
