Verlon Whitaker Davis, 88, of Artesia, died in Roswell on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004.

He was born on March 10, 1916, in Clarendon, Texas, to J. Emmit and Ellen Williams Whitaker Davis.

He graduated from New Mexico Highlands in 1940. He took a job in Forest, teaching school and coaching sports. He married Mabel Pearl “Perky” Morgan in 1941. They moved to Springer where he continued teaching and coaching until World War II.

He enlisted as an Ensign in the United States Navy and saw duty in the South Pacific.

He married Nancy Yapp Knorr on Oct. 15, 1960, in Santa Fe.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; his second wife; his parents; a brother, Loran; two sisters, Christine and Lorene; and a son, Larry.

Survivors include six children Dan Knorr (and wife, Sharon) of El Paso, Texas, Roxanne Yates (Fred) of Roswell, Robert Davis (Be) of North Oaks, Minn., Barbara Thornton (Gene) of Lamy, John Knorr (Rose Mary) of Artesia, and Andrea Knorr Crockett of Telluride, Colo.; 15 grandchildren, Gabrielle Keenum (Michael) of Lubbock, Daniel Knorr (Amy) of Houston, Rebecca Pemberton (Bob) of Austin, Texas, Sarah Glass (Hunter) of Dallas, Amanda Yates of Austin, Texas, William Davis (Katherine) of Santa Fe, Jane and Elizabeth Davis of North Oaks, Minn., Robert Thornton of Las Cruces, Stacey Gunderson (Travis) of Los Lunas, Allison and Julia Crockett of Telluride, Colo. and Jack, Ben and Meg Knorr of Artesia; three great-grandchildren, Mikaela, Shaler and Chloe Keenum of Lubbock; a sister, Viva Davis of Clovis; two brothers, Pete Davis of Clovis and Jack Davis (Bobbie) of Roswell; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The Rev. C.H. Burroughs will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia.

Arrangements are by Terpening and Son Mortuary Company of Artesia.
