Arcenio “Shorty” Manzanares, 81, of Portales, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at his home.
He was born on Dec. 30, 1922, in Sena, to Sophia and Sixto Manzanares.
He married Erma Salazar on Dec. 5, 1945, in Denver. He lived in Sena until 1960 when he moved to Portales. At different times he was employed on several local farms, Borden Peanut Mill, Portales Valley Mill and IGA grocery store. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church. Family members said he loved music, enjoyed singing and he and his wife were known to be excellent dancers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sons, Darrell, Toby and Danny Manzanares and a son who died at birth; four daughters, Lenora, Sandra, Flora and Josephine Manzanares; a grandson, Gerard Sisneros; a brother, Juan Manzanares; and a sister, Lola Chavez.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Leroy Manzanares (and wife, Martha) of Portales and Chris Manzanares (Connie) of Las Vegas, N.M.; four daughters, Marcella Montano (Max) of Artesia, Kristy Sisneros (Joe) of Portales, Loretta Tarango (Raymond) of Odessa, Texas, and Gloria Tarango (Jesse) of Andrews, Texas; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Pablo Aguilar of Sena and Ignacio Lovato of Ribera.
Father Sotero Sena will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Marcella and Max Montano, Kristy and Joe Sisneros, Loretta, Raymond, Gloria and Jesse Tarango and Leroy, Martha, Chris and Connie Manzanares.
Honorary pallbearers are Sylvia and Denise Manzanares.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
