Mr. George Babers Jr., 53, of Clovis, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
He was born on May 13, 1951, in Dawson, Texas, to Frank and Jewel Stevenson Babers.
He graduated from Clovis High School in 1969 and then from Eastern New Mexico University with a degree in business management. He married Margarett Phillips on Dec. 24, 1982, in Las Cruces.
He worked for the city of Clovis for over 20 years at Roy Walker and the Sanitation Department. He retired from the city in 1999 and worked for Wal-Mart. Family members said he was well known and respected for his involvement in coaching the youth in Clovis in baseball and basketball for many years.
He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Howard Babers; and many relatives.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; two sons, Jeffery Smiley of Clovis and Jeremy Smiley of Barksdale AFB, La.; a daughter, Kathey Smiley of Clovis; a foster child, Romeo Rodriguez of the home; a brother, Jerry Babers of Clovis; five sisters, Sharin Gaston of Cleveland, Annie Johnson of Phoenix; Teresa Bell of Clovis, Cindy Barnett of Las Vegas, Nev., and Frankie Byrd of Wichita Falls, Texas; and four granddaughters, Jocelyn, Faith, Mya and Shanlie Smiley, all of Clovis.
The Rev. Terry Martin will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.
Pallbearers are Kevin, Wesley and Travis Phillips, Bryan Bradley, Simeon Martin and Curtis Branch.
Honorary pallbearers are his sons and nephews.
Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
