Mr. Max Hobbs, 78, of Portales, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Vista Care Hospice in Lubbock, TX
He was born on July 24, 1925, in Portales, to Alma Lee and Add Hobbs.
He graduated from Portales High School in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, then returned to Portales. He married Fae Beth Hill on July 12, 1946, in Lubbock. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University in business administration. He was part owner of Cooper Hobbs Chevrolet for a number of years. He later owned Portales Ford Co. and the Mr. Shop, a men’s clothing store on the square, which he later traded for a Culligan Soft Water franchise. He and his wife co-owned Gals, a local ladies-ready-to-wear store. About 10 years ago he retired to play golf and spend time at his home in Ruidoso. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lion’s Club, Portales Country Club and the local Chamber of Commerce. Family members said he enjoyed playing golf, water skiing and making woodworking projects.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Chester Hobbs; and by his wife.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Morgan (and husband, Bob) of Fort Collins, Colo.; two grandchildren, Kymberly Koontz (Eric) and Addison Morgan; and two great-grandchildren, Karter and Riley Koontz.
The Rev. Harry Riser will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are John Howl, Johnny and Hubert Morgan, Keith Hall, Ernest Leach, Bennie Aday, Bud Kenyon, Buster Hatch, Ken Hubbard, Dick Hood.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches, P.O. Box 5000, Boys Ranch, N.M. 87002-5000 or the First United Methodist Church in Portales.
