Chandler will be attorney for the people

By Bennie Nieves: Guest columnist

Editor’s note: The Clovis News Journal on Thursday offered a guest column to both district-attorney candidates in Tuesday’s primary election. Incumbent Brett Carter chose to write his own report, while challenger Matthew Chandler asked his honorary campaign chairman to write the report. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

As a lifetime resident of Clovis, a retired business owner and a World War II veteran, I have known many great leaders. However, very seldom in my life have I ever outwardly spoken about a leader seeking a political office.
With Tuesday’s primary election two days away, I believe it is now time to make a stand publicly and endorse Matthew Chandler for district attorney.

Accordingly, I will be short and to the point.

I know all of the obstacles a district attorney will encounter during a career because my dear brother, the late Rueben Nieves, was a long-serving district attorney and district judge in this community.

Many times my brother would explain to me that being the “people’s attorney” meant that one must never compromise his integrity, always seek the truth and have the constant courage to “always do the right thing.”

We have all three of these qualities and more in Matthew Chandler and he is well prepared to accept this role.

First and foremost, Matthew is a man who loves God. He also has the characteristics of an effective leader, as he is intelligent, loyal, disciplined, motivated, confident and, most importantly for this position, he’s an exceptional prosecutor.

Prior to this election, I had the opportunity to watch Chandler at work in the courtroom and I can verify that he takes great pride in prosecuting criminal cases.

He has the compassion and listening skills to help a small child sitting in the witness stand to open up to a jury box of 12 adults.

Chandler has the unique ability to see his cases through the eyes of those whose lives are in his hands. He knows when to dig into the trenches and fight the good fight for the people of his hometown.

Most importantly, he has an intense devotion to protect and provide justice for one and for all.

It takes a lot of courage to share your dreams to the public and Chandler has done just that over the past several months. He has just the right characteristics and vision to lead an effective district attorney’s office, all while keeping our community as safe as possible.

May I sum all of this up by stating we have a great opportunity on Tuesday to elect a district attorney who has proven to be faithful to God, to his family and the entire population of the 9th judicial district.

So please join me, many law enforcement officers and hundreds of other members of this community and vote for a well-prepared and ready candidate in Matthew Chandler.
Our community will benefit like no other under his leadership in the district attorney’s office and his commitments will not let us down.

Thank you for the consideration.

Bennie Nieves is honorary chairman of the campaign to elect Matthew Chandler district attorney.
