ACU sweeps doubleheader from Zias

ABILENE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s woes continued on Sunday as the Zias were swept by Abilene Christian 6-2 and 7-0 in Lone Star Conference South Division softball.

Allison Crouse (3-3) pitched both ends of the twin bill for the Wildcats (13-23, 4-6 South). She allowed just 13 hits all day — 12 of them singles — and did not walk a batter in either game.

The only extra-base hit — a leadoff homer in the top of the third by shortstop Misty Torrez — staked the Zias (9-25, 0-10) to a 1-0 lead in the opener, but the Wildcats took advantage of two ENMU errors to score four unearned runs against senior Maegan Rhoten (2-10) in the bottom of the inning.

The Zias pulled to 4-2 in the fifth on a single by Blair Campbell, two infield outs and a single by Kyleigh Harris, but ACU first baseman Katie Bryan socked her 10th and 11th homers of the season in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

Bryan, Kristin Alvarado and Danielle Faulk each had two of Abilene Christian’s eight hits against Rhoten, who walked two and struck out four. Cassandra Gonzales had a pair of hits for Eastern.

In the second game, Bryan singled in a run in the first inning and the Wildcats broke it open by scoring three times in both the fifth and sixth innings to chase Lauren King (3-9).

ACU got its runs after two were out in the fifth on a hit batsman, an RBI double by Alvarado and run-scoring singles by Bryan and Faulk.

In the sixth, Michele Gereaux hit a run-scoring single and Valerie Malkinson added a two-run double.

The Wildcats finished with 13 hits, getting two apiece from each of the top six hitters in their lineup. Meantime, ENMU’s Tracy Jordan had a pair of singles.

The teams were scheduled to play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, but the games were pushed back by inclement weather. They will complete their four-game set with a 2 p.m. (MST) twin bill today.
