Monday is Earth Day, and as part of the environmental observation, efforts are being made to collect phonebooks for recycling instead of having them go into the landfill.
The Rooney and Moon morning show on KSMX MIX107.5 radio sponsored a three-hour recycling event on Thursday, according to a news release from the station.
The city of Clovis, in cooperation with local schools and Cannon Air Force Base, will hold another recycling effort on Monday, said Johnny Stokes, recycling director for the city.
He said a vendor has been located who will accept the phone books for recycling.
“We hope to collect 20 tons of books,” he said.
All local elementary schools, except for Zia, will have containers to collect the phone books. As each container is filled, they will be picked up by city personnel for disposal.
Although Monday is Earth Day, city workers will continue to pick up the phone books at the participating schools until April 15, Stokes said.
